Pre-planned Funerals: Taking Control and Leaving with Love

Thinking about your own funeral might not come easily, but pre-planning a funeral is one of the most thoughtful things you can do - for yourself and for the people you love. It’s not about dwelling on death. It’s about taking control of how your life is celebrated and remembered, making sure your final farewell reflects who you truly are.

Pre-planned Funerals: Taking Control and Leaving with Love

As a Humanist funeral celebrant in North Wales, I help people design meaningful ceremonies that feel authentic, personal and full of love.

know that thinking about your own funeral isn’t the easiest subject to tackle, but pre-planning can be one of the most thoughtful and meaningful things you do - for yourself and for the people you love. It’s a chance to take the weight off your loved ones’ shoulders by making decisions ahead of time, ensuring that when the day comes, they won’t have to worry about the details or second-guess what you might have wanted.

Pre-planning also gives you the unique opportunity to create something deeply personal, a ceremony that reflects your life, your values, and your personality. Whether it’s a joyful celebration of everything you’ve achieved, a quiet and simple gathering, or something in between, it’s your story, told your way.

Why Plan Your Funeral in Advance?

When you pre-plan your funeral, you remove the emotional and practical burden from your loved ones. Instead of worrying about what you might have wanted, they can focus on celebrating your life.

Pre-planning gives you the chance to:

  • Make choices that reflect your values and beliefs
  • Shape the tone of your ceremony — whether joyful, simple, or reflective
  • Leave behind clear instructions that bring peace of mind
  • Create a lasting legacy that feels true to you

Pre-paid vs Pre-planned Funerals — What’s the Difference?

Many funeral directors offer pre-paid funeral plans, which allow you to pay in advance for practical costs such as:

  • Collection and care of your body
  • The coffin and transport
  • Burial or cremation fees

However, most pre-paid plans don’t include the ceremony itself — the words, the music, and the stories that make it uniquely yours.

That’s where pre-planned funerals come in. Working with a celebrant means you can design every element of the ceremony, ensuring your send-off truly represents your life and values.
